1. The purpose of a deposit is to commit to purchasing a hedgehog and is non-refundable if the buyer fails to follow through on their purchase.
2. Please be certain that you are willing and able to follow through with your purchase before placing a $75.00 deposit. We take this transaction as sign you are 100% sure this is the pet for you.
   
3. We do not offer refunds because we have made your hedgehog unavailable to other customers upon your deposit and have potentially lost another sale.

Illegal States to Own Hedgehogs

Information in this section is provided by Hedgehog Central Thank You to those that worked hard for this information so hedgehogs can be safely owned.

Arizona

 Hedgehogs are currently illegal to possess in Arizona without a State license that is virtually impossible to obtain.

The restrictions in AZ are rather bizarre. African Pygmy hedgehogs are 'officially' legal, but Arizona Game & Fish Department will only allow keepers to have hedgehogs if you can first meet certain housing and other requirements. The requirements that they stipulate are virtually impossible for even large, accredited zoos to meet. As a result, there is little chance that the average person will be allowed to keep a hedgehog within the state.

California

Hedgehogs are currently illegal to possess in California

Hedgehogs are illegal in the entire state of California. California has a law that deems all animals not specifically listed as legal under State law as being illegal by default. Until such time as California's Department of Fish and Game is willing to consider hedgehogs for legal status, they will continue to be considered contraband pets and may be confiscated and either moved out of state or destroyed.

Georgia

For some time the State of Georgia was unclear on their attitude toward hedgehogs.  Unfortunately, recent clarification has deemed them illegal. It seems they are concerned that escaped pet animals may set up a resident wild population. Oddly enough, licensed breeders are allowed, but any hedgehogs sold as pets must be shipped out of state.

Hawaii

Due to the risk of hedgehogs being capable of surviving in the wilds of these Pacific islands, hedgehogs are illegal throughout the state and are confiscated whenever they are found.

Maine

The latest information (as of April, 2007)  is the following:
Two permits are required to own a hedgehog in Maine. The first is an importation permit and the other is a Possession permit. There is a fee of $27 for each permit application. There is some uncertainty as to what the requirements for permit acceptance are but it is apparently a lengthy process due to the fact that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife are currently updating their unrestricted species list.
At present, any hedgehog found in the State without the proper permit will be confiscated with the individual owner being fined.

Pennsylvania

100% Illegal in PA (Don't even ask this is the worst state to even try to drive through with a hedgehog.)

A very unfortunate political battle has developed within the State of Pennsylvania making hedgehogs illegal to the point where threats have been made against even the transport of hedgehogs through the state on the way to another state.
   All of this is the result of an initial (and unusual) law established in the 1990's. Under that law, hedgehogs within the state were legal, but it was illegal to import fresh bloodlines into the state. A few breeders violated that law resulting in the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) declaring all out war on all hedgehogs within the state. Breeder's homes have been raided and their hedgehogs confiscated with all of the zeal of a major drug bust. Suffice it to say, owning a hedgehog in Pennsylvania under the draconian rule of PGC is extremely dangerous for both owner and hedgehog.

Vermont (back on list 12/2007)

This was not on Hedgehog Central so I will look for updated information regarding this state.

Municipalities Where Hedgehogs are Illegal:

• The 5 Boroughs of New York City

• Douglas County, Nebraska.

• Windsor, Ontario

• Langley, British Columbia

Once the babies reach a week old, we require a $75 non-refundable deposit to reserve your hedgehog. We will e-mail you to let you know when your deposit is due. Your deposit will hold your baby to weaning age. If you are unable to pick up your baby by 6 or 7 weeks of age, Hedgie Haven is willing to hold your hedgehog as long as you are paid in full.

Once payments are received, they are non-refundable. We will email you to let you know when your deposit is received. Please only reserve a hedgehog if you are sure that it is the right choice for you.

We encourage you visits to meet and interacted with our herd. By doing so this will help you in deciding if a hedgehog is the right pet for you. Since we are a small breeder and we operate out of our house, we ask that you make an appointment at least a week in advance so we can make sure your visit is time well spent learning about hedgehogs as pets.

If you have a hedgehog reserved, We do our best to have updated photos every Friday so you too can grow with your hedgehog before it comes home.

Hedgie Haven takes : Pay Pal ( there is a extra $4.00 to $6.00  processing fee) , Money orders and cash. We do not take personal checks at this time.

Hedgie Haven take hedgehog ownership very seriously. Please think before you decide to purchase a hedgehog. We do not offer refunds. If you are not sure if a hedgehog is a suitable pet please email or call us with your questions.  If at any time you are no longer able to care for your hedgehog, for whatever reason, you MUST rescue the hedgehog back to Hedgie Haven. You must sign agreement before you leave Hedgie Haven. We will give it a permanent home or find a hedgehog friendly home to rehome to. We do not offer any financial compensation for this service.

Hedgie Haven guarantees that all our hedgehogs, to the best of our knowledge, are free from any health problems. All baby hedgehogs are guaranteed to be free from congenital problems until age 6 months. If a hedgehog dies before the age of 6 months, we will replace the animal at no charge if given a necropsy report from a licensed veterinarian stating the nature of the problem was due to heredity or present at birth.

Hedgehogs over the age of 6 months do not carry a long-term health guarantee. They will be checked by a veterinarian prior to leaving our premises and will be guaranteed to be free of any communicable diseases at that time. These guarantees do not include accident, negligence or any treatable or communicable illness.

Since a hedgehog will not develop its true color until five months of age (after quilling when the hedgie loses it's baby quills and new quills fill in), we cannot guarantee the color of any hedgehog. We can, however, try to get you a certain color. We hope to have a variety of standards and colors. *Please note we lost the female that we knew had Algerian Blacks. Hazel has had a few but there might be a long waiting list for these.

Hedgie Haven does register all litters with the IHR. Your pedigree and Form 7020 will list this number. Should the IHR not get us the number before your hedgehog goes home we will email or call you with the number as soon as we get it. It is your responsibility to update the IHR records to your information showing ownership.

* At this time I am still waiting on many IHR #'s even for my own hedgehogs. Please be patient with the folks over on IHR.

 I am willing to workout delivery places for those that live in state of Indiana only. However picking up is the best way since I am not rushed going over all the things with you before your hedgehog goes home. 

FACT: All our hedgehogs have a clean lineage line meaning no hedgehogs have been or will be  inbreed for color results. All breeding hedgehogs have come from different breeder or born here and bred with non related hedgehogs to insure the lineage lines do not cross.

As a rescue station first and foremost after 11 years of rescue I am making it a personal responsibility as a breeder to keep track of where hedgehogs from me are. Take the time to think about all the advice I gave you before your hedgehog even went home with you. Now think about if you just sold it to a friend that thought your hedgehog was "COOL" and had very little knowledge or no knowledge about hedgehogs. Now from time to time I do have meetings here at Hedgie Haven on transfer of your animal to friend or family. This is so they get informed on the hedgehogs needs.
