Hedgie Haven started out as a Rescue for neglected Hedgehogs. From time to time, hedgehog owners find that they are no longer able to care for their hedgehogs. Regardless of what the situation is, whether they just don't have any time for their animal, or can't afford it, or are moving and can't take them with them. Please don't just leave them behind to fend on their own, Hedgie Haven does take in rescues. However, we can not give financial restitution to the owner, we can however offer that we will take your animal in, provide it with the medical attention arises, and properly care for that animal. If and when that animal is completely fit, we may try to find a suitable pet only home for that hedgehog. If for some reason that the hedgehog can not be placed in a pet only home, Hedgie Haven will care for that hedgehog on a permanent basis.

Under weight and scared to come out of igloo. She was a middle of the night drive down to KY. one of the smallest hedgehogs I have ever had come in the door. As you can see just a week later she was trusting enough to finally climb in my hand.

Owner moved away to college came to us spoiled so we kept on spoiling him. His owner always kept in touch.

I do have a question fact sheet for anyone that needs to place their hedgehog in rescue. This is to insure that your hedgehog will get the care that it needs.
Lieal was a special needs hedgehog
7 1/2 years old, he had no teeth so he was on a special diet. He could not walk very well due to having only 3 legs. This came about when a piece of hair got wrapped his back leg. Only after days of not showing any attention to him did the owner find him already missing the lower part of the left leg. The owners vet gave me a call when she took him in to be put down. The vet said I have a special little guy that will need lots of love do you think you have room. A 4 hour round trip later Lieal was at his new home. I made some contacts in the hedgehog community and found a special diet just right for him. Out of the many rescues I have taken in this little guy tugged at my heart. Had he just been given a look over before he was placed back in the cage he would not have had to struggle during his life. Now with that said WOW 7 ½ years old even with his special needs. Healthy hedgehogs sometimes don't make it that long. I have been told by many that it was the daily sitting in my lap in his later years that could have been the reason he held on. He waited on time each day for me to get him out for our one on one time. I am so glad that when he did pass it was quietly doing what he loved best... snuggled down on my lap.
( Lieal that is right he was an Albino!
I know, I know, I always say I don't care for red beady eyes.
But this guy captured my heart as soon as I seen him.)

Donations to Hedgie Haven are more than welcome for the rescue fund. This fund will help with vet bills, supplies, medications, special foods, and adoption fees that many need to be paid in order to rescue a hedgehog. Now more than ever it is used to pay for those in the middle of the night drives across the state or to another state to pick up that hedgie that needs love. Donations can be sent to PayPal hedgiehaven@yahoo.com is the email to use there. Simply state "RESCUE FUND" in your donation.
A warm thanks to all those in the past that have sent to both Hedgie Haven and sponsored the Hedgehogs during our run each year in the "Wheel A Thon" for Hedgehogs Welfare Society. ( For those that have asked for the last two years we have not "Wheeled all night" but will again in 2011.

HI my name was Spunky. My owner needed to find me a loving home with folks that knew something about the care of hedgehogs like me. Now I was a little scared so I did one of those "Screams of Death" in 7 years my new care giver had never heard such a sound. She said that I would never have to be afraid here at the Haven. Since being here I have not been very "Spunky" like so the folks here gave me a new name "Spanky". I like the new name ,kinda goes with my new adventure in life.
My new owner Kelsey is showing me at the Cass County 4H fair this year. Her title this year is "Domestication" since hedgehogs are not a domesticated animal as of yet. Me being a rescue and of a different color than the first hedgehogs brought to the USA. Teaches the folks just how domesticated a hedgehog can be with lots of love and attention. I am so excited to represent hedgehogs in this learning event. I got a blue ribbon!

Peanut came to us from a pet shop. His mother was mated with her brother and was kept in a 10 gallon fish tank . Peanut had WHS! He also had a lump on his back that was cancer that the vet could not remove. We hope his final days with us made his life a happy one.
Peanut pass away peacefully on March 19th,2007.
So as you are looking at Hedgie Havens Rescues ,Herd and Babies that have been born here ask yourself some questions...
Is this pet for me? Can I give a hedgehog a permanent home? Do I have the funds to care for my new pet if it should get sick? Do I have a home planned out should I not be able to care for my hedgehog?
